FAQs: Decking

Are decking boards a standard size?

There is no standard size for decking boards. Decking boards come in a range of thicknesses, widths, and lengths, and the right size will depend on your decking design, shape, and how the boards will be used

How thick should timber decking be?

As a general guide, 25 mm- 32 mm decking boards are the most common for residential builds. Thicker decking boards (relative to their width) are stronger, offering a more substantial, durable feeling underfoot. Thinner boards can be a cheaper alternative when load requirements allow.

25mm decking can be a practical choice, being both structurally supportive and cost-effective.

Why are decking boards different widths?

Decking board width can affect both the appearance and installation of your deck. Wider boards can cover more area with fewer boards and create a clean, contemporary look, while narrower decking boards can offer a more traditional appearance.

What Lengths are decking boards available in?

Decking boards are available in various lengths, including 1800, 2400, and 3600mm. Longer boards can reduce the number of joins, while shorter lengths can be easier to install and reduce waste.

What is the cheapest type of decking?

Reject Decking can be a great cheap alternative for your deck. Rejects are products that don't meet our high quality standards and so are sold at a discounted price, offering you a cost-effective decking alternative.

What is reject timber?

Reject (or B-Grade) timber has at least one defect present on each board. These defects can include bluestain, mould, fallen/ dead knots, or splits and cracks. They may not be as reliable as premium decking boards, but they come at a more cost-effective price and offer a rustic finish.

Can I use non-pressure treated wood for my decking?

No, it's not recommended to use untreated timber for your decking, patio, or outdoor projects. Without treatment, wood is vulnerable to the elements and can begin to rot or be damaged due to moisture, mould, and UV light. Treatment timber resists decay, and lasts much longer against the elements.
